Digital vs printed UK passport photo size

GOV.UK sets different size rules depending on how you apply. An online application needs a digital photo, measured in pixels and kilobytes. A paper application needs printed photos, measured in millimetres.

Fix your photo

If your photo doesn't meet the requirement above, click "Fix my photo" — it sends your image to the crop tool below, already set to a 600×750px crop and JPEG output. Position the crop over your face and background, then click "Crop image."

GOV.UK says that if you take the photo on your own device, you shouldn't crop it yourself — the online application crops it for you. Use this crop only when your file fails the minimum-size or file-size check, and keep your head, shoulders and upper body in frame. The crop is set for the digital upload, not for printing at 45mm × 35mm.

Common problems with UK passport photos

Last verified: September 2026

Covers the passport application's own digital photo upload. This does not cover UK visa applications, which are a separate process not yet covered by this checker. File format isn't stated on the official page — JPEG is the safe, universally accepted default this tool uses when fixing your photo.

Requirements can change and may vary by application or authority. IMAGE SIZE PRO checks your photo against the requirements shown on this page and does not guarantee acceptance. Always verify the latest instructions from the official authority before submitting.

Privacy by construction

Nothing you process is ever uploaded.

A lot of online image tools upload your file, work on it on a server, and promise to delete it afterwards. The tools here open the file with your browser's own image APIs and do the work in this tab, whether that's compressing, cropping, or reading pixel colors. The image is never sent over the network, so there's no server copy to keep or delete. That matters most for passport photos, ID scans, and visa forms.

Read how it works

// what happens to the file you add

const bitmap = await createImageBitmap(file);

// decoded in this tab: no fetch(), no upload

ctx.drawImage(bitmap, 0, 0, width, height);

// then resize, crop, or read pixels, depending on the tool

const blob = await canvas.toBlob(format, quality);

Frequently asked questions

What size should a UK passport photo be?

It depends on how you apply. For an online application, GOV.UK requires a digital photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, as a file between 50KB and 10MB — the rules the checker on this page tests. For a paper application, you need 2 identical printed photos measuring 45mm high by 35mm wide.

What size is a printed UK passport photo in mm and inches?

GOV.UK requires printed passport photos to measure 45mm high by 35mm wide — about 1.77 × 1.38 inches, the standard size of UK photo booths — with your head, from chin to crown, between 29mm and 34mm high. They must be printed on plain white photographic paper with no border and not cut down from a larger picture. This page checks digital photos only; it can't measure a printed photo.

Is there a maximum pixel size for a UK passport photo?

GOV.UK's published rules state a minimum (600×750px) but no maximum pixel size — the file-size range (50KB–10MB) is the main upper bound to keep in mind.

Does this cover UK visa photos too?

No — this page covers the passport application's own digital photo requirements only. UK visa applications use a separate process that isn't yet covered by this checker.

What are the passport photo requirements?

For an online UK (British) passport application, GOV.UK requires a digital photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, saved as a file between 50KB and 10MB, against a plain light-coloured background, showing your head, shoulders and upper body with eyes open and a plain expression. Printed photos for a paper application have their own rules — see the digital vs printed comparison above.

Is there a free UK passport photo checker?

Yes — upload your photo above and it's checked against GOV.UK's own published pixel-dimension and file-size rules, free, with no account and no upload to a server (it runs in your browser). Composition and background (face position, expression, plain background) are shown as guidance rather than checked automatically — see the notes above the checker.
